The wealthy florentine Buoso Donati has died. Immediately his aristocratic relatives flock to his deathbed in search of the will which they pick apart until to their horror they realise they have been cut out of their inheritance.

Meanwhile lovely but poor Lauretta wishes to marry Rinuccio Donati, but is laughed away due to her low status, until her sharp witted father Gianni Schicci plots a way to rewrite the will in the relative’s favour.
